At Freelin-Wade, we offer co-extruded tubing—an adaptable solution that combines multiple materials to meet your specific application needs. With co-extrusion, we can create near endless material combinations, delivering optimal performance, durability, and cost-efficiency. In this article, we explore how Freelin-Wade’s co-extruded tubing can improve tubing performance while maintaining cost-efficiency to help you reach your desired outcome.
The Co-Extruded Plastic Tubing Processes
Co-extrusion simultaneously feeds two layers of tubing through two separate extruders. The melted plastic is pushed through a single die to form a desired tube shape and size. Layer thickness can be adjusted to form co-extruded tubing of different strengths, stiffnesses and features. Tubing is cooled through a water trough to cure the plastic tubing into its final, desired shape. A laser measures the outside diameter of the tubing continuously through the extrusion process, and is monitored to ensure the tubing remains in spec. Tubing is pushed by the extruder on one end and pulled by a conveyor on the other, keeping the tension on the tubing for consistent sizing.Solve Your Toughest Challenges With Co-Extruded Tubing
Co-extrusion allows us to combine materials in a single tube, offering a wide range of benefits. For example, we can pair a polyurethane outer layer for flexibility with a food-grade nylon inner liner that’s perfect for beverage applications. Or, we can combine a nylon outer layer for pressure holding and chemical resistance with an EVA inner liner, providing an effective vapor barrier. Yet another popular option is polyurethane outer for flexibility and abrasion resistance with a nylon inner liner for chemical compatibility.Additional Applications For Co-Extruded Tubing
